Where Do North American Migrating
Land Birds Go In The Winter?

MOST– orioles, hummingbirds, thrushes, warblers, vireos, tanagers, hawks and others – winter in Latin America from about mid-November through February.

The following countries are their common, primary wintering homes away from home.

Are the tropical forests that they need still there? Look for your favorites.

Little attention or protection is paid our own migratory birds once they’ve left home. Here, they are not only threatened by loss of regular habitat such as woodlands, they also face continuing destruction of migratory stop-over points as they migrate for their lives along the coasts and inland. Inland habitat such as the San Pedro River from Arizona to Mexico, and other Western rivers; Gulf Coast stretches from northern Florida to Texas; routes along the Atlantic coastline to the Carribean and farther South are being gobbled up by growth.

Migrating birds cannot find new food and water without resting places. And they will never come back to us if their wintering homes are destroyed as well.

While they are out of sight and easily forgotten, why not ask how they are doing?
